Resort fees force you to pay for hotel amenities you don’t use

Savvy travelers know that more and more hotels are adding hidden fees to their bills. One vacationer has filed a class action lawsuit accusing some popular Las Vegas casinos of hiding their resort fee when you book a room. The suit, filed in federal court in California, accuses the Venetian and the Palazzo hotels of failing to be upfront about a $29 daily resort fee.

The guest says the hotels listed a room at $209 a night but only learned about the $29 resort fee in the confirmation email, after he gave his credit card. The suit claims this violates a 2012 Federal Trade Commission warning to hotels, which said the fee must be disclosed at time of booking.

The owners of the Venetian and Palazzo will not comment on the suit but say their resort fees are listed on the booking webpage if you look. From the Doesn’t That Stink file, you get to pay the resort fee, even if you never use the resort amenities.

Resort fees can now be as high as $50 a day for use of the pool, workout room, and other facilities at some hotels. If you are just there to sleep, you’ll say “Doesn’t That Stink” when you have to pay $30 or $40 a night for a pool you only got to dream about.

Bottom line: Look carefully at the fine print before you type in your credit card number. Most hotels now list the extra fees before you pay, but it can take some hunting to find them. And if an extra fee pops up after you book it, then call and complain so you don’t waste your money.
