Controversial new hotel approved near downtown Oklahoma City despite concerns

Plans for a controversial hotel near downtown Oklahoma City are moving forward despite concerns. On Tuesday, the city council gave the green light to the new business near Martin Luther King and Reno Ave. However, the business right behind the development is notorious for making noise.

Shredding metal is a noisy business, which is why Derichebourg Recycling has dealt with numerous noise complains for years.

“It’s like big explosions. Boom. It’s just loud,” said Yetta Laskey, who lives nearby.

Derichebourg says they understand the noise complaints and oppose building a new hotel adjacent to a truck stop.

“It’s right behind us. This motel, they’re not going to like it,” said David Pardue, an attorney.

The area of Reno Ave. and MLK Blvd. already has several other hotels across the street.

Pardue says the recycling business is already dealing with noise complaints from those hotels and a new one would only bring additional complaints.

“That’s just the way it is. We were there first,” said Pardue.

“I see potential for more problems bringing a hotel right there,” said David Greenwell, a councilman for Oklahoma City.

While Greenwell agreed the hotel may not be a good fit, the council approved the hotel 7-2.

Many on the council feared they may not have a legal reason to oppose the rezoning.

“If they own the land, they know what’s going on there,” said James Greiner, a councilman. “I wouldn’t want to stand in front of the owners building a hotel there.”

“It’s up to them if they can bear with the noise,” said Laskey.

It didn’t hurt his cause, but the attorney that represents the land owner actually failed to show up to the council meeting.

He told NewsChannel 4 that he got the time of the meeting wrong, but didn’t have time to go on camera to talk about the issue.
